The best measure of the qualifications and competence of a professional is that obtained with established criteria by peers in their field and the quality of technical products produced by the professional.
Given this, and the need for evidence of qualification in Ergonomics/Human Factors, the Oxford Research Institute has established an exemplar process for certification based upon a controlled peer-review process.
Applicants seeking certification have three criteria to satisfy which will determine a certification level and will be reviewed by a third-party independent review board. Criteria include:
Work experience and education. Demonstrated eligibility, e.g. college degree, sponsor recommendations, years of experience, etc.
Peer review of work products. Peer-reviewed evidence of professional applied knowledge of technical ergonomics. e.g. technical reports, publications, training developed, conference talks, etc.
Demonstrate subject matter knowledge by passing the exam. This is a 180 question written exam (including essay) that tests for competency in ergonomics and related fields.
There are four certification levels - two in professional areas: Certified Industrial Ergonomist (CIE), and Certified Human Factors Engineering Professional (CHFEP). Additionally, Certified Associate Ergonomist (CAE) is offered to those who do not meet professional requirements and Certified Assistant Ergonomist (CAsE) for those who do not meet CAE requirements.
