Certification Program
Overview The best measure of the qualifications and competence of professional persons in most technical fields is that obtained by the judgment of peers in that particular field and the quality of technical products produced by the professional. Given this, and the need for evidence of qualification in Ergonomics/Human Factors, the Oxford Research Institute has established a rigorous process for certification based upon a controlled peer review process. ORI has established a certification program that has been accepted as the standard measure of the qualifications and competence of professional persons in most technical fields, which is that obtained by the judgment of peers in that particular field and the quality of technical products produced by the professional. Given this and the need for evidence of qualification in Ergonomics/Human Factors, the Oxford Research Institute has established a process for certification based upon a controlled peer review process. This process was formally instituted in 1993 with the selection of a review committee appointed by the Institute. Oxford Research Institute is committed to performing this service on a "cost" basis.
Certification Criteria Applicants seeking certification have three criteria to satisfy. The extent an applicant satisfy the 3 criteria will identify which certification level (e.g. CHFEP, CIE, CAE, or CAsE) the applicant is qualified. Each application is reviewed with the understanding and weighting that takes into consideration the diversity in experience and education of practitioners in the ergonomics community.
The application package is reviewed by a third party, independent review board reviews the application for these 3 main criteria.
Criteria 1. Establish eligibility with work experience and education.Demonstrated eligibility with your work experience and education. e.g. College Degree, Sponsor Recommendations, Years of Experience, etc.
Criteria 2.Peer review of work products.Peer reviewed evidence of professional applied knowledge of technical ergonomics. e.g. work product such as Technical Reports, Publications, Training Developed, Conference Talks, etc.
Criteria 3. Demonstrate subject matter knowledge by passing a rigorous ~ 180 question written exam with Q&A and Essay. Take a 180 question written Q&A exam and Essay that demonstrates subject matter knowledge and tests for competency in: •Ergonomics •Biomechanics, Kinesiology, Physiology •Statistics •Risk assessment •Ergonomic design criteria •Ergonomic standards and guidelines •Human behavior •Productivity
Certification Levels The Oxford Research Institute invites application for certification in one of two professional areas: Certified Industrial Ergonomist (CIE), and Certified Human Factors Engineering Professional (CHFEP). Additionally, the designation as a Certified Associate Ergonomist (CAE) and is offered to those who do not quite meet the requirements of the CIE or CHFEP designations. There is another certification level, Certified Assistant Ergonomist (CAsE) for those who do not meet the CAE level requirements.
Criteria Background The certification committee has proposed the criteria during the period of November 1995 through December 2003. Benefits derived from certification through the Oxford Research Institute
Your certification reflects the fact that have met a rigorous set of certification acceptance criteria and found competent to claim the CIE designation which was awarded by an independent, non-profit, certification and accrediting body, officially recognized by the US Government.
The renewal of your certification indicates that you continue to meet the CEU requirements and abide by the code of conduct established for a Certified Industrial Ergonomist. This designation assures your employer and the general public that you have been found competent in both knowledge and experience to identify, and solve ergonomic problems / issues which will significantly lower the risk of injury, reduce exposure to risk, facilitate or enhance performance efficiency and productivity of workers. Your renewed certification designation (CIE) assures the public and your clients that you are at the top of your field as an ergonomics practitioner.
Free assistance injob placement for CIE’s and CHFEP’s in the field of ergonomics or Human Factors Engineering
Limited Free Research to answer your technical questions if the time spent is less than three hours.
Free Research Reports as they are generated by the Institute.
ORI will team with any certificate holder or “Preferred Provider Program” to augment his/her technical capability in ergonomics, Human Factors engineering, statistics, materials science, mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, mathematics, signal processing, IT and a host of other disciplines available through the Oxford Research Institute Inc.
ORI offers an independent third party evaluation and award for Ergonomic service provider organizations if they meet certain measurable criteria: see web site at www.OxfordResearch.org.
ORI will, refer business which contact them, to organizations which obtain the “Preferred Provider” designation or are awarded the Five Star Seal of Ergonomic Excellence for a specific product that ORI has tested and used.
We will allow our CIE’s, CHFEP’s and other certificate holders to use our patent lawyers on a “cost basis”, to facilitate the process of obtaining a patent, patent search or patent application and required drawings for your invention. We believe that this service will save almost 50% of the fees and cost usually and typically associated with obtaining a patent.
If you have a client that has developed a product, a tool or system that could benefit from an independent ergonomic assessment and is interested in “product differentiation”, they qualify for, and possible receive up to a “Five Star Seal for Ergonomic Excellence” in design. ORI will perform this assessment service at our cost if you recommend the product to us for testing.
